Some ideas start with a plan. This one started with homesickness.

James grew up in the north of England, spending weekends in the Peak District and school holidays in Scotland with his family. The kind of upbringing where wet boots and muddy waterproofs were just part of life. He never thought much about it at the time — it was just what you did.

Then he met Emma, fell in love, and followed her to Australia.

Sydney has a lot going for it. The weather is better. The beaches are extraordinary. But standing on Bondi on a warm Tuesday morning James found himself thinking about grey skies and heather and the particular silence you only get on a Scottish hillside when the mist is sitting low in the valley.

He went back to visit every couple of years. And every time he did, he spent time in the Highlands — proper time, with a tent and a pack and no particular agenda. It was on one of those trips, somewhere between Glencoe and nowhere in particular, that he started paying attention to his gear.

Not because it was good. Because it kept letting him down.

A sleeping mat that gave up in the cold. A stove that took three times as long as the packaging promised. A jacket that was waterproof right up until it wasn't. Good gear existed — he knew that — but finding it without either paying a premium for a brand name or gambling on something unknown was harder than it should be.

Emma had heard the complaints enough times. One evening over dinner in Sydney she looked up from her wine and said — just start the thing. Stop talking about it.

So he did.
